The Airfields of the East of England
Follow in the footsteps of the US 8th Air Force in the Second World War on our two-day tour of the airfields of the East of England. Centered on Norwich, this tour includes a visit to one of the US 8th Air Force airfields, the Norfolk Aviation Museum and the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. Our tour is led by Eric Ratcliffe, our US 8th Air Force specialist, who has guided for a number of US 8th Air Force Association Reunion visits as well as led tours for interested individuals, couples and groups.
2 day / 1 night Flexi Tour
You are collected from Norwich train station and taken to the airfield of your choice (see below for
options) for a general tour. Here you will be given an introduction to the Bomber War in which the
Airmen of the US 8th Air Force fought and all too often died.
Following your airfield visit you are taken to the Flixton Buck Public House for lunch. In the afternoon you visit the Norfolk Aviation Museum next door before returning to Norwich.
In the evening you have the option of taking part in a guided stroll around the centre of the city that is designed to give you an understanding of the rest and recuperation enjoyed by the American Airmen.

You are collected from your Norwich hotel following your breakfast and taken to the Cambridge American
Cemetery and Memorial. It is here that many of the gallant airmen who lost their lives during the
sorties that they flew are buried and you will visit some of those associated with the airfield visited
on day one.
Following the visit to the American Cemetery and Memorial you are taken to the Eagle Public House in Cambridge city centre for Lunch. This is the famous Public House frequented by airmen of the Second World War and is packed with memorabilia.
In the afternoon you are driven to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford where you have a chance to see up close the many aircraft on display before dropping you off at Norwich train station for your onward journey.

Pre-Tour and / or Post-Tour Accommodation
Accommodation at our Norwich hotel prior to and / or following your tour can be arranged at extra cost.
Hardwick Airfield - Hardwick was home to the 93rd (Heavy) Bomber Group of the US 8th Air
Force. Here you will have a private tour of the airfield and the opportunity to visit their small
museum. On Fridays and weekends there is also a chance to see the P51 Mustang by prior arrangement and
for an additional fee it is possible to take an optional flight in the Mustang (depending upon
Old Buckenham Airfield - Old Buckenham was home to the 453rd (Heavy) Bomber Group of the US 8th Air Force. Here you will have a private tour of the airfield. Powered aircraft still fly from this airfield and an optional flight is available by prior arrangement for an additional fee (depending upon availability).
Parham Airfield - Parham was home to the 390th (Heavy) Bomber Group of the US 8th Air Force. Here you will have a private tour of the airfield and the opportunity to visit the 390th Group Memorial Air Museum as well as the Museum of the British Resistance Organisation and the Auxiliary Units.
Shipdham Airfield - Shipdham was home to the 44th (Heavy) Bomber Group of the US 8th Air Force. Here you will have a private tour of the airfield and visit the 44th Bomber Group Museum. Powered aircraft still fly from this airfield and an optional flight is available by prior arrangement for an additional fee (depending upon availability).
Tibenham Airfield - Tibenham was home to the 445th (Heavy) Bomber Group of the US 8th Air Force. Here you will have a private tour and take morning coffee in the club house that has a collection of photographs and archives relating to the American occupation of the airfield. It is possible to take an optional flight in a glider or motor glider for an additional fee (depending upon availability).
Thorpe Abbots Airfield - Thorpe Abbots was home to the 100th (Heavy) Bomber Group of the US 8th Air Force. Here you will have a private tour of the airfield and the opportunity to visit the control tower and small museum.
The cost of your tour
The typical cost for a 2 day / 1 night In the footsteps® of the US 8th Air Force in the
East of England tour is £450.00 per person.
This price per person are based upon:
- Two people sharing a twin room.
- A minimum of 4 people touring.
- Travel in a dedicate tour vehicle driven by our expert battlefield historian / guide.
A supplement of £57.00 applies where single occupancy is required.
A supplement of £125.00 per person applies when less than 4 people are touring.
A deposit of 30% or £200.00 per person, whichever is the greater, is payable on booking.
Booking indicates your acceptance of our Tour Terms and Conditions.
An additional supplement may apply for anniversary dates to cover any increase in the associated costs.
What your tour includes
- In-tour land travel only.
- A group size of at least 2 but no more than 8 people.
- 2 days escorted tour with our expert battlefield historian / guide.
- All museum admission fees.
- 1 night bed and breakfast accommodation at one of our 3-star partner hotels.
- The opportunity to discuss your battlefield travel plans with our expert team.
What your tour does not include
- Lunch and Dinner.
- Snacks and Drinks.
- Personal expenses.
- Personal travel insurance.
All of our Flexi-date tours can have optional extras added to them. We can, for example, add any of the following to your tour: -
- Transfer to the battlefield area.
- Ferry crossings or Eurostar from the UK.
- Accommodation the night before the tour.
- Accommodation the night night after the tour.
- All inclusive.
- Additional days.
Customising your Flexi-date tour
All of our Flexi-date tours are fully customisable to allow you to see the sites that are most important to you. Where changes to the standard itinerary are made there may be an additional charge to cover the associated additional costs.
Your money is safe. We are members ot the TTA and all monies paid to us are held in a trust account and cannot be drawn down by us until the tour is over.
