Explore nearly half a century of medieval architectural design at the Marcher border castles of Gwent. Our expert-led, one-day tour visits the castles at Chepstow, Raglan, and Caerphilly, which have a compelling narrative that encompasses nearly 500 years of medieval history.
You travel from London’s Paddington rail station to Newport rail station where you will be met by your historian/guide.
Our first stop of the day is Chepstow Castle, where we spend approximately one hour exploring this 11th-century Norman Castle.
We then head to Raglan and its 15th-century castle, where we spend another hour exploring this fortress-palace, before stopping for lunch at Raglan Castle’s café.
It's then on to Caerphilly and its 13th-century castle, where we explore this example of High Medieval concentric military engineering, the prototype for the later, imperial fortresses built by Edward I in North Wales.
Our tour is complete, you are returned to Newport rail station, where you are dropped off for your onward journey at 16:30.
