Dudley Giles

Battlefield Historian / IGBG Accredited Guide #26

Dudley Giles spent 34 years in the British Army where, as a military police officer, he gained operational experience in Ulster, the Balkans, Afghanistan and, of course, the Cold War. He has held a wide variety of command, staff and international appointments (including a two-year exchange tour with the Canadian Army) and has served in every type of formation headquarters from brigade to 5 star (HQ SHAPE). In 2006/7 he spent nine months as General David Richards' Provost Marshal in Afghanistan where he was also tasked to take journalists and diplomats on tours of the 19th and 20th-century battlefields around Kabul.

Dudley retired in 2012 to become the CEO of a national membership organisation representing the interest of Britain's watch and clock makers. He retired again in 2017 in order to devote more time to battlefield guiding and military research. He has an MA in British First World War Studies from the University of Birmingham and has been an active battlefield guide for more than 25 years. He is a member of the Western Front Association and an accredited member of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides (Badge No 26).

Dudley conducts tours by vehicle, on foot and especially by bicycle. He is familiar with all the major battlefields of the Western Front (WW1) and North-West Europe (WW2) and has led tours to Sicily and mainland Italy (WW2). Based on his previous service in Canada, he has a particular affinity with the operations of the Canadian troops who served in both world wars.
