1-day Castles of Herefordshire Tour

The country of Herefordshire, in the Welsh Marches, boasts a wealth of historic military architecture and this tour offers an opportunity to explore three contrasting examples: the great medieval fortress of Goodrich; the more intimate country home at Croft Castle; and the ruins of the Motte and Baily castle at Kilpeck Castle, with its Romanesque Church of Saint Mary and Saint David, said to be the finest Norman church in England.

The best way to explore the castles of Herefordshire.

You travel from London’s Paddington rail station to Newport rail station, where you will be met by your historian/guide.

Our first stop of the day is Goodrich Castle, widely cited as one of the "finest and best-preserved of all English medieval castles". Your historian/guide will discuss Goodrich’s role as a border fortification and its dramatic destruction during the Civil War.

Our second stop is Kilpeck Castle and Church. Kilpeck Castle is an earthwork ruin with little of its castle walls still standing, but its value is the adjacent Church of Saint Mary and Saint David, famous for its stone carvings and their fine state of preservation.

Our third stop is Croft Castle. Here, we get a contrasting view of an English castle that has been an intimate family home and showcases 1000 years of history.

Our visit to Croft Castle completes our tour, and you are returned to Hereford rail station, where you are dropped off for your return journey to London Paddington at 16:12. You are due to arrive back in London at 19:14.

The Tour Vehicle

The vehicle for your one-day tour of the Marcher Castles of Gwent is specifically for your tour and are selected according to group size:

  • 1 to 3 people will be in a mid-sized SUV
  • 4 to 6 people will be in an 8 or 9 seat people carrier.

Mobility Aids

You must contact us in advance if you wish to bring any mobility aids (wheelchairs or walkers). We require detail of the dimensions (open and folded) and weight. These items must be able to be folded and stored in the luggage compartment of the tour vehicle.
