In the footsteps of HEROES!

In the footsteps of Captain Douglas William Lane-Nichols MC, 8th Queen’s (Royal West Surry Regiment) on 20th August 1916

On the 20th August 1916 the 8th Queen’s (Royal West Surry Regiment) relieved the 8th Royal West Kents in the left trenches at Guillemont. D Coy held the trench just west of the Quarry captured and consolidated by the 73rd Brigade on the 19th inst. A Coy and C Coy in Knott Trench and B Coy sent out patrols into the area bounded by Brompton Road on the north, Hill Street on the east and Mount Street on the south. The object was to establish posts at T19 C 2. 8 ½ (the crossroads north of the Quarry), T19 C. 6. 3 ½ (the crossroads west of the Quarry) and T19 C. 4. 6 (the T-junction between the other two points).

These patrols had orders not to engage with the enemy. Captain D W Lane-Nichols was leading one of these patrols when he was killed by the enemy who were found to be holding the Hill Street and the posts could not be established. Captain Douglas William Lane-Nichols has no known grave and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing on the Somme, Pier and Face 5 D and 6 D.
