Thousands of men and hundreds of horses battled on through the mud of the Ypres Salient in an attempt to capture the Passchendaele Ridge from the German Imperial Army. A combination of the heaviest bombardment that the world had ever seen coupled with appalling weather conditions meant that thousands of men would die before their objective was achieved.
