The battle of Passchendaele lasted for three months during 1917 and the cost of human life was horrific. Thousands of men and hundreds of horses battled on through the mud of the Ypres Salient in an attempt to capture the Passchendaele Ridge from the German Imperial Army. A combination of the heaviest bombardment that the world had ever seen coupled with appalling weather conditions meant that thousands of men would die before their objective was achieved.
